Malone, Sister James Marie

An oral history of Sister James Marie Malone, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill from 1927 until 1992. The interview was conducted by Sister Patricia Marie Stack on April 23, 1983 and by Sister Rebecca Ann Espinosa on July 31, 1988.

Sister James Marie Malone was born on August 31, 1908 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Daughter of James P. Malone and Ella Grace Cover, Mary Frances Malone entered the community on December 8, 1927 as Sister James Marie Malone.

Sister James Marie ministered as a teacher at schools in western Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Arizona. She was one of the founding members of the Sisters’ SS. Peter and Paul’s School in Tucson in 1933 and taught there and at schools in Arizona, including Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Scottsdale and St. John Evangelist in Tucson, for over thirty years. Other schools she taught at include St. Anselm, Swissvale; St. Leo, Altoona; St. James, Wilkinsburg; and Sacred Heart, Glyndon, Maryland.

Sister James Marie earned her B.Ed. in Mathematics with a minor in English from Duquesne University in 1947. In 1975, she wrote a history of the Sister of Charity’s missions in Arizona, which was a major source for this period of the Order’s history.
Sister James Marie Malone passed away on August 30, 1992 at the age of 83.
